Thumb Rules

Thumb Rules in Paediatric Practice form the backbone of effective paediatric assessment and management. They support better clinical judgment, improve diagnosis, and can be lifesaving.

1. Parents are usually right unless proved otherwise.
   Listen carefully to parents. They know their child best and there is a reason they are in hospital.

2. Always follow the ABCD approach
   It is the Gold Standard in management of any patient. Always reassess and revisit the steps.

3. Keep an open mind
   Not to get fixated. Do not hesitate to ask for help. Seek support from colleagues and allied specialists such as pathologists and microbiologists when needed.

4. Use machines and technology wisely - Monitors and machines are a very helpful and practically indispensable part of our medical management , but always trust the child’s clinical condition more than the numbers on a screen.
   Listen to the devices, but respond to what the child is telling you clinically.
